چکیده

We examined the population genetics of six species of marine cladocerans, using a »600 bp fragment of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene sequence. Phylogenetic analysis revealed signiWcant intraspeciWc, semiallopatric phylogenetic breaks in four out of Wve species belonging to the Podonidae, supporting an ancient radiation and oceanic expansion for this group. By contrast, Penilia avirostris (Sididae) displayed no phylogeographic structure across a global sampling, suggesting a recent worldwide expansion. Our results also show a transoceanic distribution of identical or very similar haplotypes in several species of marine Cladocera, which may be interpreted as either natural transport or evidence of recent anthropogenic transport. If the latter is the case, marine cladocerans represent one of the Wrst genetically documented cases of exotic or invasive marine zooplankton, likely an underreported group.

Phylogeography of Ponto-Caspian crustaceans: a benthic-planktonic comparison.

The Black, Azov, Caspian and Aral Seas, remnants of the intracontinental Paratethys basin, are home to a spectacular diversity of crustaceans. This study examines the past history of the Ponto-Caspian fauna through comparative phylogeographical studies on both benthic and planktonic taxa, based on an examination of nucleotide diversity in the mitochondrial, cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) ...

Comparative phylogeography of the ocean planet.

Understanding how geography, oceanography, and climate have ultimately shaped marine biodiversity requires aligning the distributions of genetic diversity across multiple taxa. Here, we examine phylogeographic partitions in the sea against a backdrop of biogeographic provinces defined by taxonomy, endemism, and species composition. The taxonomic identities used to define biogeographic provinces...

Integrative approaches to biogeography: patterns and processes on land and in the sea.

At the 2002 SICB meeting in Anaheim, we brought together some of the leaders in terrestrial and marine phylogeography for a day-long symposium. This symposium combined presentations from ten scientists whose question-driven research focuses on testing hypotheses about patterns and processes in biogeography in both vertebrate and invertebrate animals and including marine, terrestrial, and freshw...

Incipient speciation of Catostylus mosaicus (Scyphozoa, Rhizostomeae, Catostylidae), comparative phylogeography and biogeography in south-east Australia

Aim Phylogeography provides a framework to explain and integrate patterns of marine biodiversity at infraand supra-specific levels. As originally expounded, the phylogeographic hypotheses are generalities that have limited discriminatory power; the goal of this study is to generate and test specific instances of the hypotheses, thereby better elucidating both local patterns of evolution and the...

Comparative Phylogeography in Fijian Coral Reef Fishes: A Multi-Taxa Approach towards Marine Reserve Design

Delineating barriers to connectivity is important in marine reserve design as they describe the strength and number of connections among a reserve's constituent parts, and ultimately help characterize the resilience of the system to perturbations at each node. Here we demonstrate the utility of multi-taxa phylogeography in the design of a system of marine protected areas within Fiji. Gathering ...
